Sangha : Protection and Wisdom
As the new year approaches, I reflect on the symbolism and blessings of the protection strings, also known as Sangha threads, often placed for the new year to flow through. I have Lana to thank, for reminding me that my strings were coming loose. Perhaps, spiritually, it was a sign that change is on the horizon.
In Buddhism, the tradition is to never tie the strings yourself. It’s a practice that involves the elder of the family doing so, passing down blessings through this simple yet meaningful act. While my family is not around to offer this, as it would traditionally come from my mother, I chose to have the head of my household—my husband—tie the seven knots for me, using both yellow and red strings, or Sangha.
The red string symbolizes protection, while the yellow string represents wisdom. They are believed to bring good fortune, success, and blessings. Tying these strings around my left wrist reminds me of the protection and wisdom of the Buddha’s teachings. The left side of the body is known to be the receiving side in many spiritual traditions, including Buddhism. It is here that the blessings and protective energies are thought to flow through and anchor the wearer, symbolizing a new phase in one’s spiritual journey.
The act of wearing these strings connects me to the Buddhist path and marks a reaffirmation of my commitment to live according to the teachings of Lord Buddha. As I embark on my new journey in the year ahead, I feel the need for the blessings and success that life has to offer, along with the protection needed for the path I will walk.
I also pray for the light of the Buddha to illuminate the way forward, guiding me toward the ones I love and who are part of my desired awakening. There is a sense of nervousness as I take this step, but I am never afraid to walk the path of Lord Buddha. His teachings provide the strength and guidance I need, and I pray for happiness and resilience throughout this festive season.
As Christmas Eve dawns and the new year approaches, I send my blessings to you and yours. May we all walk safely into new beginnings, guided by the Buddha’s light, and may this season bring us peace, strength, and the courage to embrace the changes ahead.
Happy New Year, with protection, wisdom, and blessings for the journey to come.
