For the love of Baking...
A Lesson in Baking (and Why Being Lazy Costs Money)
As someone who loves to bake, I thought I’d indulge in a little treat today—nothing too fancy, just some coconut mini tarts from a local baker/hairdresser. I’m all for supporting small businesses, but I have to admit, I was devastated by the result.
I’m a fussy baker and an even fussier eater. If something looks dry, chances are it probably is. When the mini tarts arrived, I took one bite and immediately knew they didn’t live up to expectations. Bland, dry, and lacking any real flavor, I couldn’t help but feel disappointed, especially after paying top dollar for them. It wasn’t just about the money—it was about the craving for something delicious that went completely unmet.
So, I decided to fire up my oven and bake something myself. There’s nothing like the satisfaction of creating something with your own hands, especially when it’s something as comforting as coconut and jam tarts. I’ll be honest, they weren’t as perfect as my grandmother’s (few things are), and they certainly weren’t five-star bakery quality, but they were mine, and that’s what made all the difference.
I freehanded the base, creating a biscuit-like casing, and blind-baked it for about 7 minutes. For the filling, I melted butter, added brown sugar, and toasted some desiccated coconut, then combined it all for a simple yet satisfying treat. Another 10 minutes in the oven, and voila! A batch of mini coconut tarts that satisfied my craving like nothing else could.
It took me back to my days running Broke Chef back in 2016 when baking wasn’t just about making money—it was about the passion, the creativity, and that deep craving for good food that makes life so much richer. Baking for my family has always been about love, care, and making sure there’s not a hair or dry bite in sight. After all, good food is an art, not a quick way to make a buck.
I’ve learned a valuable lesson today—being lazy with food costs money. And with Christmas around the corner, it’s all about making those tasty treats that bring joy to your family and friends. So, aprons on, it’s time to bake! 🎄✨
Love,
G xxx
